The Growth Cycle and Proper Care
Eyelashes are not purely an aesthetic feature. They play an important protective role for the eyes and follow a clearly defined biological growth cycle. Understanding their structure and the individual stages of development makes it easier to choose appropriate care products and to realistically evaluate the effects of eyelash serums and cosmetics.

The Natural Eyelash Growth Cycle
Each eyelash goes through three growth phases. This cycle explains why lashes do not grow indefinitely and why visible results from care products take time.
Anagen phase – growth phase
During this phase, the lash actively grows. It lasts approximately four to six weeks, and only about 30–40 percent of lashes are in this phase at any given time. This is when conditioning products and eyelash serums can most effectively support growth.
Catagen phase – transition phase
The lash stops growing and gradually disconnects from its nutrient supply. This stage usually lasts two to three weeks. At this point, further lengthening of the lash is no longer possible.
Telogen phase – resting phase
The lash remains in the follicle until it naturally sheds and is replaced by a new one. This phase can last several months. Losing one to five lashes per day is completely normal.
How Long Are Eyelashes Really?
The average eyelash length ranges from about 8 to 12 millimeters. Maximum length is determined primarily by genetics, while proper care mainly affects lash density, strength, and overall condition.
What Negatively Affects Lash Growth
- frequent mechanical stress from rubbing or aggressive makeup removal
- daily use of waterproof mascara
- unsuitable or irritating cosmetic ingredients
- hormonal changes
- lack of sleep and nutrient deficiencies
These factors can shorten the lash growth cycle or cause premature shedding.
Smart Care for Healthy Lashes
Effective lash care is not about instant results, but about consistency and good tolerance.
- gentle cleansing without excessive friction
- using mascaras formulated for sensitive eyes
- choosing care products with proven ingredients such as peptides, panthenol, or biotin
- avoiding unnecessary irritants
An eyelash serum can visibly improve lash appearance by supporting the growth phase and reducing breakage. However, noticeable results usually appear no earlier than after six to eight weeks of regular use.
Realistic Expectations Instead of Promises
No product can completely change the biological lash growth cycle. Proper care strengthens existing lashes, extends their lifespan, and visually improves density. Patience and consistent application are essential.
Healthy lashes are the result of knowledge, consistent care, and a realistic understanding of the body’s natural processes.
